Phase III investigations take place when there will be an adverse effect to sites listed on or eligible for listing on the National 
Register. Full-scale data recovery is required when the site cannot be avoided. This level of effort includes a carefully prepared research design, hand and mechanical excavations, extensive artifact, floral, and faunal analysis, and the preparation of a technical archaeological report.
